Sourav Ganguly Joins Candlelight Protest in Kolkata: Calls for Justice in Trainee Doctor’s Murder
**Cricket Legend and Family Demand Action Against Rising Violence**
Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, accompanied by his wife Dona Ganguly and their daughter Sana Ganguly, took part in a candlelight protest in Kolkata. The demonstration was organized to demand justice for a trainee doctor who was tragically raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The high-profile family's participation underscores the severity of the case, which has highlighted the urgent need to address violence against women in India. Sana Ganguly expressed the collective frustration and outrage, stating, “We want justice, whatever it takes to get it... This has to stop. Every day we hear about some rape case and we feel bad that this is happening even in 2024.”
**Nationwide Protests and Supreme Court Intervention**
The gruesome incident has ignited widespread protests from medical professionals and citizens across India. Doctors have organized candlelight marches, protests, and work stoppages to advocate for stronger protections and stricter laws aimed at preventing violence against medical staff.
In response to the outcry, the Supreme Court of India has taken significant steps by setting up a national task force of doctors. This panel will develop guidelines to enhance the safety and protection of healthcare workers nationwide. Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud emphasized the critical nature of these measures, stating, “Protecting the safety of doctors and women doctors is a matter of national interest and principle of equality. The nation cannot await another rape for it to take some steps.”
The court has also demanded a progress report from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the ongoing probe into the crime. While a civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the case, the victim’s family believes multiple perpetrators were involved and is calling for a comprehensive investigation.
The tragedy has brought renewed focus to the issue of gender-based violence and the need for immediate and effective action to safeguard women and professionals in India.
